"My grandfather's clock was too big for the shelf,
There is something enchanting about longcase clocks. The ornate woodwork, the endearing nickname, the gentle rhythm of the ticking pendulum... My grandparents had one of these clocks. A very fine piece it was too, mahogany with a bronze plated pendulum. It had incredible iron-work embossed Roman numerals on the face... I used to gaze at it endlessly (as much out of boredom as anything else - there was never much to do at my grandparents' house).
It doesn't surprise me that these clocks became essential props in children's stories and mystery writings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They contained all the mysteries of time. I digress, suffice it to say, grandfather clocks are a Must Have for any preppy home.
